Why some months get 3 checks
Biweekly pay means 26 paychecks a year, sometimes 27. Ten months get 2 checks and two months get 3. If you budget your monthly bills from 2 checks, the third one is extra room.

Ways to use the extra check
- Top up your emergency fund (see the emergency fund calculator).
- Make an extra debt payment.
- Fund sinking funds for Christmas, car repairs or insurance.
- Get one month ahead on bills.
One caution
If you are paid 27 times, check with payroll whether your salary is split into 27 smaller checks. Paydays on holidays may also move.
