Many youth coaches are parents who said yes because nobody else did. You do not need to be an expert. A simple, repeatable practice structure keeps kids moving and having fun.
A 60-minute practice template
- Warm-up (10 min): everyone with a ball, dribbling games like tag or "red light, green light".
- Activity 1 (15 min): one skill, such as dribbling or passing, in a game format.
- Activity 2 (15 min): build on the same skill with a bit more pressure.
- Small-sided game (15 min): 3v3 or 4v4 so everyone touches the ball.
- Cool-down (5 min): stretch and one thing they did well.
Coaching tips
- Keep lines short or eliminate them.
- Use few words and quick demos.
- Praise effort and specific actions.
- Rotate positions at young ages.
Plan the season
Pick a skill focus each week, keep an equipment list, and share the calendar with parents early.
Fair playing time
Track minutes each game so every player gets a fair share, and use attendance to plan.
Get parents involved
A volunteer and snack schedule spreads the work.
