Getting a real letter is a small joy. Pen pals are a great new year habit for kids learning to write, for adults who want a slower kind of friendship, and for anyone practicing a language.
Finding a pen pal safely
Start with people you know (cousins, old friends, a classmate who moved) or organized programs through schools, libraries or clubs. Kids' pen pals should go through a trusted adult or school. Do not share your home address with strangers; some programs forward letters for you.
Your first letter
Introduce yourself: hobbies, favorite books or foods, where you live in general terms, and a few questions for them.
Make it fun
Add a drawing, a sticker, a pressed leaf or a photo of your pet. Decorate the envelope.
Keep it going
Track who wrote last and when, so you know whose turn it is. Set a goal such as replying within two weeks.
